First impressions are so important and when it comes to toilets, it can say an awful lot about your business! When you enter a washroom, what do you look for? The answer is probably how clean and tidy they are.

We all need a loo whoever and wherever we are particularly in the workplace where we spend a considerable amount of time. Being so essential, and as a shared facility, it is imperative they are kept clean. Toilets are the perfect place for sharing bacteria and viruses including Colds, flu, norovirus or worse, salmonella, E. Coli, Staphylococcus and Campylobacter because they are all highly transferable.

Here are some tips to keep your washroom clean:

Handwashing

Encouraging handwashing after using the toilet anywhere is crucial to avoiding onward contamination. If hot water or soap aren’t available, hand gel is a great substitute until hands can be washed properly.

Close the lid

Closing the lid to a toilet as it’s flushed will ensure that spray from the contents isn’t launched into the atmosphere! If not, all the germs and bacteria will land on the surrounding surface. It’s a great way to reduce the risk of spreading bacteria.

Clean up

It’s very off putting to enter a cubicle and the last person has left evidence they’ve been in there before you! A wet or muddy floor, an unflushed toilet or floor covered in toilet paper is really unwelcoming and avoidable. If toilets are checked regularly this will help to keep on top of these potential problems.

Disinfect

Every time someone enters the washroom, they will touch toilet seats, handles, the flush, dispensers, locks and switches. All these should be disinfected as well as the floors, tiles and areas around the toilets or urinals. Don’t forget the mirrors and lights, vents, fans and light switches are also prone to harbouring germs! Bin all rubbish on a daily basis.

Clean toilet brushes! The toilet brush could spread bacteria if not cleaned after every use with disinfecting solution. Changing the brush regularly is also advised.

Using the right products for these purposes is essential. A reputable cleaning contractor will use chemicals that pass EN 1276 which kills bacteria in dirty conditions. BS EN 1276 is the European standard for the bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants as proof of effective infection control against harmful micro-organisms such as MRSA, Salmonella, E.Coli, Flu Virus (H1N1) and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. In order to pass this standard, products have been tested by an independent laboratory and must prove a bacteria kill rate of 99.999% within 5 minutes.

Given that we are surrounded by so many bugs in the public and workplaces, sickness often occurs, and productivity can be affected. This can be overcome by consistency of cleaning and hygiene. It’s also about paying attention to the detail and having highly trained cleaning operatives with solid processes to ensure best cleaning practices.
