Why Deep Cleaning is Important

The following of Mrs Hinch and Marie Kondo, fondly called ‘cleanfluencers’ on social media has gained momentum at a phenomenal rate. We have seen the ‘Hinch’ effect take hold with spectacular results. But, does it suggest we are more interested in cleaning and tidying than ever before?

Well it would seem the answer is yes! Supermarkets have reportedly sold out of some of products recommended by them and interesting techniques are being tried to keep our room free of unpleasant odours or to clean out a washing machine.

However, it seems that cleaning our workplaces doesn’t really go deep enough. There are many areas of our offices that are neglected and some which have never been cleaned!

Which Areas are Neglected?

It could be assumed that hard to access areas or those that are inaccessible are missed off the cleaning list. Surprisingly, this is not the case. Various fixtures and fittings come into this category and many of them are easy to get to and are frequently used.

Areas rarely considered for cleaning are:

  • Under sofas and chairs
  • The back of chair seats
  • Light fixtures
  • Light switches
  • Computer keyboards
  • Shoe rack
  • Blinds/curtains

Even more surprising are those areas where spilt food or drink can occur which ultimately may cause unpleasant smells and could be a health hazard:

  • The lid of the bin
  • Microwave
  • Fridge

Some items that are never cleaned are:

  • Entry Keypad
  • Air vents
  • Tile grout
  • Door handles
  • TV remote control

Reasons to Keep Clean?

There are advantages to keeping our workplaces clean and tidy but clearly there are some health considerations too.

Evidence suggests most cleaning is superficial. It is simply done to improve the appearance of offices. But there’s a more disturbing reason to go deep – imagine the number of times an entry keypad or TV remote are handled. They are breeding grounds for billions of bacteria 🤢.

Even if items low on the cleaning hit list aren’t cleaned every week then, they should at least feature on the ‘deep clean’ list!
